I know we've all heard about soccer and baseball and track and all that but what about the sports that no one hears about unless someone tells you about them? I'm a fencer. Is there anyone out there who does something as random as that?

Equestrian - some schools (like the one I'm going to) it is an athletic team and gets much more funding that if it is a "club sport".

My younger sister is a fencer. She was last year's bronze medalist for Florida State. Yes, I know Florida has possibly the smallest number of fencers around. In Florida despite our obvious non-abundance of fencers, there is still a fencing team at both the University of Florida and Santa Fe College (formerly Santa Fe Community College). I don't the names of any other colleges but fencing is not as random a sport as you might think. I think you can go to college search engines put fencing in as criteria or just go to Google. In fact, one of the older girls at my sister's Fencing Club got a sports scholarship to UF. So keep looking.

I'm a fencer too, and because I'm competing at a high level (national/international) I can't escape all the talk about colleges. A good amount of Div 1 colleges have fencing teams, and can offer scholarships for it. Some Div 3 schools also do, and many of the Ivies, but they can't offer athletic scholarships (they can help you get academic or need-based ones though). There are NCAA championships for fencing, and any college with a team that qualifies can compete. Many colleges also have fencing clubs, which can range from purely recreational to competitive (there's a national championships for club teams too). You can find a lot on the internet about it, usfencing.org and fencing.net are a good place to start.
