Is it necessary to know what I would like to major in now? I'm a high school senior at the moment, and the idea of college looms on the horizon. My school's college counselor advised I pick a major now, but I don't think it's really necessary until I am actually in college. What do you think?

Well, it depends on if you're going to a liberal arts college or a university. A liberal arts college eases you into a major while a university expects you to have a least one in mind.
While you don't have to decide on a major right now, it's a good idea to list a few that you're interested in. That way you'll have more time to learn what each major offers and to switch to another major if one doesn't fit you.

Your counselor really told you that? Mine, most of my teachers, and a lot of other people have told me that it's definitely NOT necessary to have your major picked. Most freshmen change their major before too long anyway. You definitely want to start thinking about it, and maybe have a few ideas, but you don't have to pick now.
I'm in the same boat you are... a senior in high school and no major. I've been thinking about psychology, English, and communications. Try mymajors.com to learn some more about majors you're thinking about. Let me know if you find out anything more about undecided majors... like I said, I'm in the same situation and the info would help. ;D

don't rush the decision, you don't want to force yourself onto the wrong path. I know people that were undecided until early in their junior year at college and things worked out fine for them.

I'm a high school sophomore and I'm still worried I have no clue. My high school counselor advised a liberal arts college. She said that 80% of seniors have a hard time picking a major and there's nothing to worry about or wrong with it.

It is not necessary to know what major you want to take up now there are hundreds of college students who are undecided in their first two years in school. As long as you have some idea of what you might want to do or are intrested in you can take your time.
