The Epic Weekend

We’re winning the football game, but no one pays attention to that sort of thing at West End High. The football games are places to hang out with friends and relax.

“Honestly, don’t pay any attention to her. Maggie’s a…” I go on, rather profanely, trying to reassure Sara that she did nothing that could have possibly have offended my ex-girlfriend, Maggie Stern. She and Sara used to be best friends, but that changed for some reason in the 8th grade, whether it was because I had my interests turned toward Sara rather than Maggie, or because Maggie began to become, well, not so nice. Now, two years later, they meet again. As usual, Maggie became upset that I was flirting with another girl, even though we have been over for 4 years now.

“I know I didn’t do anything wrong. I’m just tired of her trying to get people to feel sorry for her by doing this constantly,” Sara replies, looking up at me. I look at her in a new light. She was the one that took most of Maggie’s crap throughout her entire life, from kindergarten on. I look to my right and see Andy approaching us from the general direction of Maggie and her friends.

“Wow…she’s milking it more than usual this time,” he says, leaning up against the chain link fence on Sara’s opposite side and mimicking my casual stance with my left arm propping my body up. Sara gives him a strange look.
“What are you doing?” she asks, laughing nervously.

“What, I can’t do this? You don’t give Kyle weird looks if he does it. Look, he’s doing it now!” He says, beginning to go into a rant. Sara looks at me and I shrug. Andy does this a lot.

“Andy, you can do whatever you want, it just looks a little awkward for you,” Sara replies, gesturing at his arm. I stifle a laugh as I realize that he forgot that I was so much taller than him and put his arm at the same height as mine. He lowers his arm and leans with his back against the fence with his arms crossed, glaring. Suddenly his glare turns in to a half smile and he chuckles to himself. I follow his gaze and my eyes fall upon Rob, the new kid in my class. I recently befriended him and talked him into going to the football game. He seems to be entertaining a group of freshmen with a plastic megaphone and an accent that sounded strangely similar to the Governator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“Rob!” I shout across the field, trying to get his attention. He looks up and I wave him over. The freshmen seem reluctant to let him go, he is a sophomore after all, but he jogs over and joins our group. After a while, we get bored and decide to walk around the softball field in a large circle. I do not know who thought of the idea, but it at least we have something to do now. Not only were we walking together but, we had our arms around each other’s shoulders, in the order of Sara, me, Andy, and Rob. Rob gets a call on his phone and announces his parents are waiting in the parking lot. As Rob walks toward the entrance to the field, we begin to also because the game is over, though we walk much slower than he does. “Come on just tell me,” I plead with Andy and Sara. They have been holding something from me since they went off to talk briefly before our trek around the field.

“You’ll find out soon, man,” Andy assures me with a little half wink that he hasn’t perfected yet. I shake my head and look at Sara, who just smiles secretively. I roll my eyes and we continue our journey to the parking lot. Suddenly, I realize that we have changed direction, and are now heading behind the student center, where there are no lights.

“Hey…” I say as we turn the far corner, shielding us from the view of anyone on the road. Andy ducks out from under my arm, mumbling something about calling his mom, and I finally realize what Sara has brought me back here for as she tilts her head upward toward mine…

A minute later, I hear something. “Kyyyyyllllle…” Its my sister. I lean back slightly and whisper in Sara’s ear.

“I gotta go, I can hear my sister calling.” She nods and we walk around the student center where we are joined by Andy. Sara is immediately rushed by Kristy and Nicki who ask for the story, and Andy and I just continue our walk to the parking lot.

“Sooooo,” Andy asks, attempting again to pull off his wink. I look at him and his huge grin. “How was it?” But I just shrug and keep walking as he begins to fire questions at me. By the time we get to the parking lot, he’s out of questions. The silence is interrupted by his cell phone blaring. It’s Sara. He answers and puts it on speakerphone.

“Hey, Andy?” I hear her say. I look across the parking lot to where she, Kristy, and Nicki are sitting. I space out as he talks to her and think back to all the events of the night.

By the time I get home, it is about 11:30. Time to get online. I log on to AIM and am immediately messaged by Sar. We talk for a while and decide that we don’t really want a relationship out of what happened, but there still might be something there. After I stop talking to her, Nicki messages me. She wants to know what went on between Sara and me, as if she hadn’t heard from Sara already. Unfortunately, I begin to nod off and, the next thing I know, its 10:00 Saturday morning. I hurriedly put my laptop back on my desk. I don’t want the Parentals to know I stayed up later than necessary.

As I am about to leave for a shower, I hear a sharp chime from my computer and stop at the door. I turn and see a window flashing on the screen. I walk over and squint at the top of the window. Its Nicki again. I sigh and sit down. Hey, whatsup? Is what I see on the screen. I type back; about to take a shower…you? She responds in they way I thought she might; hinting that she wants to know about last night. Hooking up is no big deal…I claim, feeling a little sheepish for some reason. We talk for a while and then I realize that it is 11:20 and my parents think I am still asleep. I say goodbye, close my laptop, and begin my long day.

What my family and I do all day is unimportant and a complete waste of a Saturday, so I get home at about 10:00, say goodnight to the Parents, and log on to AIM, as always. Yet again, I am messaged by Nicki, and, somehow, we get onto the subject of who likes who. After discussing virtually the entire grade, I ask, So…who do you like anyway? And she responds with, I dunno, I’ve been thinking a lot…what do you think about Rob? He seems cool. I sigh. I can’t really answer that question honestly…I type slowly and send. Why not? She asks. I…just can’t. I sigh again. Okay, do you have any suggestions? She says. What about me? I say, taking the plunge. We talk about the concept for a while, and, eventually, I look up and it is 1:00 in the morning. Uh-oh, I gotta get to bed I think, I gotta long day tomorrow…again… I type. But first I decide to call her. When she answers, I immediately say, “Will you go out with me?” She decides to mess with me and says she will tell me Monday. After doing this for several minutes, she says right before she hangs up to check her Facebook. I quickly log on and click on her page. There, next to her profile, it said; Relationship status: In a relationship with Kyle Reese.
