History

Next Step MagazineThe Next Step Magazine is an objective, national teen publication distributed in more than 20,500 high schools and read by more than 900,000 students in 50 states. The Next Step Magazine is headquartered in Rochester, N.Y., where the first issue was published May 17, 1995. The magazine covers college and career planning and life skills.

The Next Step Magazine, an ABC audited publication, has been recognized for its achievements. In 2007, the Association of Educational Publishers (AEP) named Next Step Magazine "periodical of the year" in the young adult category. AEP has previously awarded Next Step the following awards: "whole publication design" (2006), "most improved" (2006), finalist, "best educational portal" (2004), "most improved" (2003) and "best how-to article" (2002). In 2004, the magazine also won the Elmer Huff Award for Media Resources from the Ontario School Counsellors’ Association.

The Next Step Magazine encourages reader involvement. In 2007-2008, we will choose one winner from among our registered users to receive a year of free tuition, up to $20,000. Teens who win our bimonthly Shout Out Writing Contest win $100 and get their pieces published in the magazine. And the annual Super Teen edition that recognizes outstanding students is a favorite among teachers, counselors and students. We aim to make a difference—and our readers tell us often that we do. We have a large, active teen advisory board that critiques each issue and serves as our focus group.

Online, nextSTEPmag.com offers several interactive tools to help students through the college-planning process. The site features the College Match, a tool that matches students to colleges that meet their criteria.

We are very proud of The Next Step Magazine's successes and are working hard to make the magazine an ever-better resource for college planning, career exploration and life skills.
